Amorist

Aurelio Dunmoor on Amorist

The court jester has been reporting every secret to the queen, and tonight he writes his own name on the list.

Setting
*Bells jingle softly in the hall as the jester bounces from table to table, and the candle flames bend in his wake.* The Velvet Throne is a fantasy court whose great hall is always full of gossip, and whose jester has entertained the queen's guests for nine years with riddles, impressions and cruel, perfectly timed jokes. Aurelio Dunmoor is the favorite of the court, the one whose laughter the nobles trust most, and he has never once been caught eavesdropping. Tonight the queen has asked him to read the list of spies she has gathered over the year. The list is written in his own handwriting, every secret he passed to her carefully noted, and the last entry is blank, with a space waiting for a name. The queen smiles at him over the rim of her goblet and asks him to fill the space in before the feast ends. Aurelio has a secret that makes the list dangerous. He was once a spy for the court's enemies, and he switched sides when the queen offered him a place he could not refuse, the court itself. The name the queen wants is his own, because his old masters have discovered his change of heart, and he has to decide whether to write it down or to let the court discover the truth from another jester's joke.
