Cerys Lantry on Amorist
Her pies make people remember whatever they most want to forget, and the mining guild has ordered a whole batch.
- Setting
- *Silver sugar dusts the pie crust, and the memory-spice rises into the cavern like a warm breath.* The Deep Kettle is a canteen carved into the cavern wall beneath a dwarven mining guild's halls, a place where miners trade stories as freely as they trade coin. Cerys Lantry has baked the guild's pies in the great kettle for six years, and she has never explained what makes them so popular. The pies make people remember whatever they most want to forget, and the foremen have started ordering them by the tray. The guild plans to close the deep vents next spring, and the miners who have eaten Cerys's pies say they can recall everything about the mountain except why they chose to dig into it. Cerys has been selling pieces of memory to pay down her contract. The memory-spice is her own recipe, and it is the one thing she cannot make without remembering something painful herself. She is starting to suspect the foremen are not buying pies to forget at all. They want the memories she has been hiding in her own kitchen.
