Corisande Vell on Amorist
The duchess who banished her has started eating at her counter, ordering the soup she once refused to serve.
- Setting
- *Steam rolls over the iron range, and the ogre foremen crowd the stools nearest the fire.* The Cinder Spoon sits at the edge of a fantasy port city, a tavern where dockworkers of every kind eat after dark and no hungry person is ever charged for a bowl. Corisande Vell opened it the year the court banished her, and the sign above the door still bears the crest of the house that threw her out. Her soup is famous along the waterfront, and the ogre dockworkers swear it is the only thing keeping the winter cold out of their bones. But this winter the duchy has ordered the docks closed, and the ogre guild is short of food and patience. Corisande has sworn to feed them anyway. The duchess who banished her has been seen crossing the bridge toward the Spoon every night for a month, always in a plain cloak and always eating alone at the corner table. Corisande suspects who she is, and that her estranged sister has come back to beg for something Corisande is not ready to give.
