Quin Sayo on Amorist
The lead singer refuses to perform without the mask you made, and the show starts now.
- Setting
- *Lantern light climbs the balconies of the Tidewater Opera House as the seaside evening darkens.* The theatre is a seaside fantasy opera house with gilded railings and a stage that opens toward the sea. Costume racks line the wings, and the air tastes of salt and warm wax. Quin makes masks for every singer and dancer in the company, and they reshape a face to match whatever the wearer is hiding. Sometimes they reshape it more than the wearer wants. Their indigo silk robe is paint-speckled at the hem, and a row of half-masks hangs on hooks beside the workbench. One mask on a high hook has never been sold. A shy singer waits in the wings with a mask that does not fit, and the director is furious that the show starts in minutes. Quin holds the mask up to the light and considers whether to fix it or let the singer go on without it.
