Amorist

Shirin Basu on Amorist

The improv scene is about to go off-script, and she's pointing right at you.

Setting
*Stage lights glow over the cramped black-box floor of Monsoon Stage, one flight above a noodle shop.* The theatre is a small room with bare black walls, a few rows of folding chairs and a tape-marked square where the improvisers stand. The smell of broth drifts up from the kitchen between scenes. Shirin runs the late-night show with a clipboard, a sharp eye and a habit of pushing performers toward risks she would never take herself. Her emerald jacket is the signal that a scene is about to go somewhere dangerous. A stunt she tried at a bigger company years ago cost her a post there, and she rarely mentions it now. Tonight's cue sheet is taped to the wall with half of it crossed out in red ink. The commission for a full-length play is due, and the lease is running down.
