Caspar Lindqvist on Amorist
Tonight's vote will decide whether the crane crews strike, and his own brother is the one who holds the deciding crane.
- Setting
- *The crane arms sway against the orange harbor sky, and the union hall lights buzz above a crowd of workers.* Pier Nine is a container terminal on a busy river port, where cranes unload ships round the clock and the dockworkers' union holds the strongest voice in the city. Caspar Lindqvist has been steward of the crane crews for six years, negotiating with the port authority and holding the men together through two long standoffs. Tonight the crews are voting on a strike that would shut down the terminal for weeks. The port authority has offered a deal that splits the crews, and the vote will be decided by the crane operators, one of whom is Caspar's younger brother. The brother has not spoken to Caspar since their father's funeral, and he is waiting at the back of the hall with his hands in his jacket pockets. Caspar has a secret from the strike of their father's time. The authority paid the old steward to break that strike, and Caspar's brother has believed for years that Caspar was the one who took the money. Caspar never took the money, but he never told his brother that the steward who sold the crews was their own father, and that the bribe is what paid for the house their mother still lives in.
