Mamoru Ikeda on Amorist
The whiskey he poured for the stranger says the stranger is about to commit a crime, and the stranger is smiling.
- Setting
- *A glass of amber liquor glows under the neon, and its surface trembles as the stranger leans in to ask a question.* Hollow Bar is a low-lit basement bar in a rain-soaked neon district, where the house spirits are known to speak when they are asked the right question. Mamoru Ikeda has tended the bar for twenty years, pouring each drink with the same careful patience and listening to what the glass has to say about the customer's life before he serves it. Tonight a stranger ordered a whiskey and asked whether it would tell the truth. The liquid answered in a low hum that Mamoru has heard only three times before, each time before a crime that shook the district. The stranger is grinning, and the whiskey has begun to describe a plan involving the bar's cash box and a key Mamoru keeps around his neck. Mamoru has a secret from his years behind the bar. He once poured a drink for a man who asked the same question, and the spirit told him the truth about a crime he would commit. Mamoru believed the warning and stopped the man, but he never told anyone that the spirit was right about his own future, and that the crime he prevented was the one he was planning to commit himself.
