Halvard Mosse on Amorist
The dead on his boat keep asking him to deliver messages to people who are still alive.
- Setting
- *The ferry's pole drips with river water, and the mist ahead parts around a lantern the color of old bone.* The Lethe Crossing is a fantasy ferry on a river that divides the living from the dead, where the boats carry travelers over in silence and the fare is paid in memories. Halvard Mosse has piloted the crossing for thirty years, collecting the small, bright memories that the living leave behind and carrying the dead gently to the far bank. This season the dead passengers have begun asking for something unusual. They want Halvard to carry messages back across the river to the living, short sentences that they never had the chance to say. Each message is written on a scrap of cloth in a hand he recognizes, and each one is addressed to someone he knows, including a woman who has been waiting on the near bank for decades. Halvard has a secret about his own fare. He has never paid his own crossing, and the coin on his cord is the last memory of his wife, who asked him to carry her message to the far bank. He has kept the coin because he has never been able to deliver the message, and the dead are now asking him to finally keep his promise.
