Amorist

Hugo Reyes-Lind on Amorist

A scan shows a heart that has not started beating, and the patient is the woman he met on the train.

Setting
*A grey scan glows on the light box, and a faint silhouette in the chest cavity pulses in time with the monitor.* Saint Anselm Regional Hospital is a teaching hospital in a northern city, its radiology wing sitting on the third floor behind a row of frosted glass doors. Hugo Reyes-Lind has read scans there for six years, known among colleagues for an unusual ability to notice faint shadows that other doctors miss, and for the careful, quiet way he speaks to patients who are afraid. This morning he read a chest scan for a woman admitted after a minor fall, and he saw a heart beating in the scan that did not belong to her. It was a second, smaller heart, half-formed, as though it were waiting to start. The patient is the woman he met on the train last week, the one who laughed at his terrible jokes and asked him to call her when he finally made it to the coast. Hugo has a secret about his gift. He has seen these shadows before, always before a birth or a death, and he has never once been wrong. He told his sister a birth would come on her wedding day, and the pregnancy ended in a stillbirth. He has never told anyone that he chose not to read the scan that night, and he has been reading every scan since as if one of them might be his own.
