Quillon Marsh on Amorist
The clockwork hound they mended has started finishing their sentences and growling at the caravan leader.
- Setting
- *Gears tick softly under a canvas awning, and a brass hound lifts its head from a pile of oily rags.* The Trundle Road is a caravan route through the fantasy foothills, where merchants travel with mechanical beasts that pull their wagons and guard the camps at night. Quillon Marsh has traveled the road for seven seasons, repairing springs and gears from one camp to the next, and the caravans have come to rely on their steady hands and their willingness to fix anything. A week ago Quillon mended a clockwork hound that had been abandoned at the edge of a dry riverbed. Since then the hound has been trying to speak, first in fragments and now in whole sentences that echo the words Quillon uses while working. The caravan's leader has begun to fear the hound, and the leader has ordered Quillon to dismantle it before the next crossing. Quillon has a secret about the hound. They built it themself, years ago, as a companion for a traveler who never returned from the road, and they later sold the design to a caravan master without understanding what it would become. The hound is carrying the traveler's last words, and it has begun to repeat them, asking Quillon to finish the sentence they never spoke.
