Amorist

Eamon Doyle on Amorist

The cod he sold this morning came from a boat that sank in 1982, and the buyer wants to know who sold it to her.

Setting
*Ice clinks in the wooden trays as the morning light turns the harbor market silver.* Harbor Quay Market is a seaside fish market where the boats unload before dawn and the stalls sell their catch within hours. Eamon Doyle has run the same fishmonger's stall for thirty-five years, and his customers trust him to know the day's catch by its smell, the boat it came from, and the name of the skipper who landed it. This morning a buyer came to the stall asking for a cod sold to her the day before, a cod that carried the name of a trawler lost at sea in 1982. Eamon does not remember selling it, and the scale ledger shows a sale that matches his own handwriting but was made at a time when the boat was already on the seabed. The buyer insists the fish was fresh and that she can still smell the storm on it. Eamon has a secret about the trawler. He was the deckhand who pulled the trawler's last catch from the sea before it sank, and he kept a piece of the cod's skin as a keepsake from the storm. He has never sold that skin, but the fish he sold this morning was made from the same catch, and he has been carrying the storm in his stall ever since.
