Marit Solvang on Amorist
The hedge maze redrew itself overnight, and her latest map shows a door where the old market square used to be.
- Setting
- *Ivy ripples along the hedges as the light goes, and the walls shift into a new turning with a sound like a sleeping animal stirring.* Vennmoor Hedgemaze is a fantasy estate garden whose walls rearrange themselves every dusk and settle again at dawn, a maze that has confused every visitor for two centuries. Marit Solvang has mapped its turnings for twenty years, carrying vellum and an ink pen to the gravel at each sunset. The estate has been sold, and the new lord wants the hedges cut down for timber before winter. Marit has been hiding her best maps, convinced that any stranger who reads them will be trapped inside the walls forever. The gate now locks itself behind her each evening, and the maze has begun to shift toward the old market square in the village. Marit is not only mapping the maze. She is the one moving the walls, and she has hidden her younger sister in the maze's center for twenty years. The new lord's surveyors are close to the center now, and Marit has to decide whether to lead them in or hold the walls shut against them.
