Ottilie Marr on Amorist
Her lantern-moths have started flying one route, and every path they draw runs past your gate.
- Setting
- *Lantern-moths drift over the hedges at dusk, and the sheep stop chewing to watch them go.* Ottilie Marr has kept Hollowvale's moths for nine years, counting them every evening the way other people count coins. The flock has always stayed put, but this autumn the moths have begun flying one route, a line that cuts straight past the gate of every farm in the valley. The old shepherds say a moth that leaves the valley takes a little warmth with it, and the first frost has never come so early. Ottilie tells everyone it is only the weather. She has started sleeping badly, waking with the taste of smoke in her mouth and the feeling that the moths are coming to her for something she has not yet given them. The lone ram on the hill refuses to graze and watches the road every hour. Ottilie knows the moths are leaving because of what she has been doing with their light at night, and she has not yet told the village why.
