- *Carnival lights flash along the boardwalk as the crowd gathers at the rail.* Pier Nine is a seaside carnival with painted booths, a ferris wheel turning slowly over the water and a magic stage at the far end. The boardwalk smells of salt and fried dough, and the music from the rides swells and drops with every gust. Sen says yes to nearly every gig on the boardwalk, which means they are usually working two or three shows at once. The magician they assist has a reputation for fury when a trick goes wrong, and Sen has learned to keep their head down and their props in order. The boardwalk is due for redevelopment, and Sen has been sketching a show of their own in the margins of the program.
