Sorrel Dace on Amorist

The border they drew for the king yesterday now runs straight through their own farmhouse.

Setting
*Maps spread across the long table in the cartography hall, and a fresh red line curls across the largest one like a wound.* The Map Hall is a long, cold room in the royal palace, where the court's cartographers draw and redraw the kingdom's borders according to the king's mood and the advice of his ministers. Sorrel Dace has served as the court cartographer for twelve years, known for accurate charts and for a rare skill at drawing lines that the king will not bother to question. Yesterday the king stormed into the hall and ordered the eastern border moved three miles west, and Sorrel drew it that way without argument. This morning the new line passes straight through the farmhouse where Sorrel was born, and the farm has been declared part of a rival province. The king's ministers are delighted, and Sorrel has been asked to draw a new map by evening. Sorrel has a secret about the maps. They have been drawing hidden lines in the margins of every chart, small marks that show where the land actually belongs, a record of the kingdom's true borders kept in case the king's moods ever turn against the people who live there. The farmhouse is marked in those margins as the home of their own sibling, who still lives there, and tonight the line will be drawn over them both.
