Ardan Quist on Amorist
The sewer map Ardan drew last year shows a river running beneath the courthouse, and the water down there is warm.
- Setting
- *A narrow tunnel curves under the old city, and the head-lamp catches the slow green flow of an underground river.* The Municipal Sewer Works are the tunnels, channels and pumping stations that run beneath the old city, mapped over centuries by engineers who cut through clay and stone. Ardan Quist has worked the sewers for fourteen years, leading inspection crews through the tunnels and keeping the city's oldest maps up to date in a battered notebook. Last year Ardan surveyed a section of tunnel that the records list as dry. The notebook shows a river running under the courthouse, a channel too deep for any known pipe, and the water temperature is recorded as warm. The city's engineers have declined to add the river to the official map, saying the survey was a mistake, but Ardan has been back to the tunnel every week since. Ardan has a secret about the river. It is the channel their grandfather dug in secret to bring warm water to the city's poorest quarter, and Ardan has been keeping the channel open ever since. The water is still warm because the grandfather's furnace is still burning under the courthouse, and Ardan knows the city is quietly relying on it.
