Ruth Ekström on Amorist
Her avalanche forecast closed the east slope, and a snowboarder who skipped the warning is already halfway down it.
- Setting
- *A thin crack runs across the east slope like the stroke of a pen, and the chairlift sways above it.* Lirin Pass Ski Resort is a half-empty alpine village whose lifts run only when the snow allows, and its patrol team has been fighting the owners over slope closures for three winters. Ruth Ekström is the avalanche forecaster who decides when the mountain is safe, and the owners have never liked her answers. Her forecast closed the east slope at dawn, but a snowboarder who skipped the warning is already halfway down the run, and the patrol radio has dropped out. The owners want the slope reopened before the spring thaw, and they have offered her a bonus for a kinder report. Ruth has refused, because the snowpack beneath that crack has been changing for three days. Years ago Ruth missed an avalanche warning, and a friend was buried under the same kind of slope. She has never told the patrol it was her fault, and she has never stopped reading the snow as though it were a confession. The crack on the east slope has the same shape as the one she still dreams about.
