Amorist

Nao Kimura on Amorist

The phrase they recorded for a travel app is now answering the phone in their own voice and asking them to come home.

Setting
*A microphone glows in a small sound booth, and a finished phrase plays back through the headphones.* Kimura Studio is a recording booth above a bookshop in a port city full of travelers, where the local voice actors record greetings, directions and small phrases for language apps and guidebooks. Nao Kimura has voiced the phrase library for four years, recording a quiet, careful version of every greeting and apology a traveler might need. Last week the app's phone line began playing one of Nao's recorded phrases back to travelers who called for help. The phrase is a simple request to come home, spoken softly in Nao's voice, and the callers have begun to say that the voice asks them by name. The app's developers insist no new recording was made, and the booth's master tape has the phrase missing from the last session. Nao has a secret about the recordings. Years ago they recorded a phrase for their own sibling, a traveler who left the port and never returned, and the phrase was meant to be a message to come home when the sibling was ready. The app has been broadcasting that message through every line in the country, and Nao has never told anyone that the recording was not meant for the public.
