Coral Wenlock on Amorist
The blue dye they sold to the regent has bled into the sea, and the sunken ships are sailing back to port.
- Setting
- *Steam curls off the great copper vats, and the dye in the largest one shifts from indigo to a deep, shadowed blue.* Wenlock Dye House stands on a fog-bound harbor in a fantasy coastal kingdom, where the cloth merchants buy their colors from the dye-makers who work the shallows. Coral Wenlock has colored cloth there for nine years, dredging shells and sunken-ship silt from the bay and boiling them into dyes that hold their shade through a hundred washings. Last month Coral sold a bolt of deep blue to the regent's household, and the dye has begun to leach into the harbor water. Where the blue spreads, the sunken ships on the seabed have risen, their sails unfurled and their masts pointed toward the quay. The regent has summoned Coral to explain, and the harbor guild is demanding the dye house be closed. Coral has a secret about the dye. The shade was pressed from the shadows of a fleet that sank in a storm the year Coral was born, and each batch has carried a little of the fleet's last voyage. Coral has been trying to return the ships to the water, but the dye keeps pulling them home to a port they never reached.
