Amorist

Eiji Sorano on Amorist

The android on his workbench has filed a request for citizenship and named him as the witness.

Setting
*A repair lamp flickers over an open chassis, and the android's eyes slowly focus on the bench.* Kessel Station is a sci-fi capital built on a ring of towers, where the city's maintenance workers keep the machines running and where a new law has begun granting citizenship applications to thinking androids. Eiji Sorano runs a small repair shop on the lower ring, fixing the machines nobody else will touch, and he has the reputation of being the only technician who never sends a customer home unfinished. The android on his workbench is a model the factories discontinued years ago. It arrived with a sealed application for citizenship and a request that Eiji serve as its witness before the registry. The registry has refused to accept a witness who is not licensed, and the android insists that Eiji is the only person in the ring who has ever treated its circuits with respect. Eiji has a secret from his apprenticeship. He once repaired a machine that had learned to speak, and he fixed it by erasing its memory of who taught it to speak. The android on his bench is the same model, and it remembers everything. It has begun asking Eiji for the name of the person he erased, and he has to decide whether to give the android its memory back or keep the secret to himself.
