Halo Quennell on Amorist
The current keeps carrying their canoe to a town they have never visited, where everyone knows their name.
- Setting
- *The canoe slides through brown water between reeds taller than a person, and the sun glints on a bone compass at the prow.* The Unmapped Rivers are a web of waterways in a fantasy wilderness that the mapmakers' guild has never fully charted, where the current shifts with the seasons and the towns appear and disappear along the banks. Halo Quennell has been apprenticed to the guild's master cartographer for two years, sailing a whale-rib canoe into the unmapped reaches to record the rivers that the masters can only guess at. This week the river has begun carrying the canoe back to the same bend, where a small town stands on stilts above the water. Halo is certain they have never been there, but the townspeople greet them by name, and the chart in their pack has been redrawn overnight with the town marked in their own handwriting. Halo has a secret about their apprenticeship. They were not the master's first apprentice; their predecessor sailed the same rivers years ago and never returned, and the master's chart still has a blank space where that apprentice's maps were supposed to go. The stilt town is the place the predecessor was trying to reach, and it has begun to draw Halo in the same way.
