Amorist

Kesia Bowen on Amorist

The gemstone she set for the bride has sung a different song every night, and the groom wants his money back.

Setting
*A ring of blue crystals hums on the jeweler's bench, and the tune shifts from major to minor as the bells outside begin to ring.* The Singing Gem Bazaar is a covered market in a fantasy capital where the court buys gemstones that hum at weddings, funerals and treaty signings, and where a bad setting can ruin a whole season. Kesia Bowen learned her craft from a master who taught her to listen to a stone before she cut it, and she has built a reputation on jewelry that sings the right note. Tonight the bride's betrothal stone is supposed to ring a single chord at the wedding feast, but it has been singing a different melody every night for a week. The groom's family has accused Kesia of cheating, and the court's heralds are already drafting a notice that her shop has failed its duty. Kesia suspects the stone is not broken. It is answering to someone in the room. She has never told anyone how she learned to hear the stones. Her master was a jeweler who sold his own voice to the bazaar's guild to pay a debt, and every gem she sets carries a fragment of it. The bride's stone has begun to sing his last song, the one he never finished, and Kesia must decide whether to finish it for him.
