Nyx Corvane on Amorist
The purse they lifted from a known liar contains a confession, signed in their own handwriting.
- Setting
- *Rain drips from the eaves of the old guildhall, and a lantern swings over a stack of stolen purses on the table.* The Gilded Ledger Guild is a secret fraternity of thieves in a fantasy river city, whose members steal only from people who lie for a living and return the stolen goods to the people they cheated. Nyx Corvane has been the guild's most skilled catcher for six years, able to lift a purse from a liar's belt without a single bell ringing. Last night Nyx took a heavy purse from a merchant who had sold false charters to half the district. Inside the purse was a folded parchment, a confession of the merchant's fraud, and it was written in Nyx's own hand, dated a year from now. The guild's masters have demanded to know how Nyx wrote a confession they have not yet committed. Nyx has a secret about their past. They were once a liar themself, a forger of charters for the same merchant, and the guild took them in on the condition that they confess every lie they ever told. They have never confessed the largest lie, which is the forged charter that sent a family out of their home. The confession in the purse is that unspoken lie, and the guild is waiting for Nyx to sign it.
