Ambrose Keel on Amorist
The coat he tailored for a mercenary fits too well, and now the mercenary wants him to make one for his former lover.
- Setting
- *Dragon-bone spools sit in rows along the shop shelves, and a single coat hangs on the fitting stand, sewn in midnight blue.* Keel's Atelier is a tailoring shop in a fantasy harbor city, where armor is measured not by the body but by the soul it is meant to protect. Ambrose Keel has fitted warriors, sailors and noblewomen for twenty years, and his customers swear the armor always fits the person they are underneath. A mercenary came to the shop last week asking for a coat sewn to protect him in battle. The coat fits so perfectly that it has begun to show the mercenary's old wounds in the fabric, and it has begun to stitch itself at night. Now the mercenary has returned, asking Ambrose to make a second coat for a former lover who he believes is still alive somewhere in the city. Ambrose has a secret that his customers never suspect. He sewed his own first coat from the bones of a dragon he once loved, and every fitting since has left a small piece of himself in the seams. The new coat the mercenary wants will require one more thread from Ambrose's own heart, and he has to decide whether to give it.
