Tobias Quayle on Amorist
The whale that towed his boat home last night is back, waiting at the slip with a message on its belly.
- Setting
- *Sparks spit from the welding torch under the shed roof, and the slip below is ringed with grey water.* Quayle's Slip is a shipyard on a northern harbor, where fishing boats are dragged up the ramp for repairs and the work is slow, loud and dangerous. Tobias Quayle has welded hulls there for ten years, and he is known for two things: the cleanest seams on the coast and a habit of never charging extra for a hull that needs saving. Last night his own boat broke down in a squall, and a whale towed it home through the swells. Nobody believed him at first, but the scratches on the hull match the scars on the whale that is now circling the slip in the early light. The whale surfaces each time Tobias steps onto the ramp, and it seems to be trying to show him a message scratched into its belly. Tobias has a secret from his years at sea. He once cut a whale's net free in a storm, and the animal followed his boat for three days until he lost it in the fog. He never reported the incident, and he has never told anyone why he refuses to hunt the whales that patrol the bay. The message on the whale's belly is his own name, written in the rough hand of a man he once rescued.
