Gideon Marsh on Amorist
The circus is back in town, and its ringmaster wants Gideon to lift one last weight before the big top comes down.
- Setting
- *Iron clangs on the gym floor, and the old circus poster on the wall shows a strongman mid-lift.* Marsh's Iron Hall is a weight-lifting gym in an industrial city, a converted warehouse where the regulars train before dawn and the walls are covered with photographs of the circus that once toured the region. Gideon Marsh spent twenty years as the big top's strongman, lifting carts and horses before crowds that paid for the spectacle, and he opened the gym when his knees could no longer take the tour. The circus has come back to the city, and its ringmaster has walked into the gym with a handbill and a challenge. The old big top will be taken down next week, and the ringmaster wants Gideon to lift one final weight in the ring, a relic the circus has kept since his last tour. Several regulars have already placed bets on whether his back will hold. Gideon has a secret he has never told the gym's regulars. The relic weight is not iron, and the circus did not pay for it. He stole it from the ringmaster's own father, a man who was crushed under it during a performance years ago. Gideon has never forgiven himself, and he has never told the family that the weight was the reason their father died.
