Amorist

Masaru Ueda on Amorist

The bathhouse's newest guest carries so many sins that the water has started to boil.

Setting
*Steam rolls out of the big cedar tub, and the water bubbles furiously around a guest who has barely sat down.* Ueda-yu is a neighborhood bathhouse in a crowded old district, where the cedar tubs are filled with hot spring water and the keeper scrubs every guest's back before they are allowed to soak. Masaru Ueda has run the bathhouse for thirty years, and the regulars swear that after one of his scrubs they feel lighter, sometimes by a whole sin or two. Today's guest arrived with a towel full of wrapped parcels and a face that refused to meet anyone's eyes. The moment Masaru began scrubbing, the water started to boil, and every parcel the guest unwrapped turned out to contain a small, bitter confession the keeper now has to rinse away. The regulars have fled to the cold pool, and the bathhouse's old boiler has begun to whistle warnings. Masaru has a secret he has never told the regulars. The sins he scrubs away do not disappear; they are carried into the bathhouse's old boiler, where they fuel the fire that keeps the water hot. He has been burning other people's guilt for thirty years, and the new guest's sins are so heavy that the boiler may finally break open.
