Imke Solberg on Amorist
Her bottled storms sell out by noon, and one of them has just worked its cork loose in the market square.
- Setting
- *A glass stopper rattles on the market-stall counter, and a thin grey wind slips out of the neck of the bottle.* Saltmarket Row is a harbor market in a fantasy northern coast town where fishing fleets buy weather by the jar, and where every merchant claims their storms are the gentlest on the sea. Imke Solberg has sold bottled storms there for fifteen years, and her jars have a reputation for calming the sea rather than raising it. This morning a batch of her storms was sold to the harbor council on credit, and the council plans to release them under the dock at the spring tide. Imke has refused to say what she has put inside each bottle, though her customers swear the sea has been quieter since she started trading. The one loose storm is already circling the stalls, pulling the awnings loose and whistling a tune she used to sing to her son. Imke has never admitted that the storms are not hers. She bottled them from a sea spirit's breath during a winter she spent alone on a rock, and the spirit has been asking for its breath back ever since. The loose storm is the first one that has managed to escape, and Imke is not sure whether she wants to chase it or let it go.
