Amorist

Lotte Auclair on Amorist

Every book she copies from the flooded library dissolves by morning, except the one page carrying her own name.

Setting
*Water laps against the reading-room steps, and the shelves rise out of the tide like the bones of an old ship.* The Vell Library sank a generation ago when the river changed course, and its books now lie beneath a shallow lagoon that the city's scholars can only visit at low tide. Lotte Auclair copies the surviving pages in a flooded reading room, writing with a waterproof ink in a cramped hand, and sells the copies to the few collectors who still care what the old books said. Today she found a page in the lowest shelf that bears her own name, written in a hand she does not recognize, on a manuscript dated to the year before she was born. Every other book she has copied this month has dissolved into silt by morning, and the scholars have begun to say the library is copying her. Lotte insists the page is a forgery, but she has started checking her own handwriting at night. Lotte has a secret that explains why the library keeps her. She was born inside the flooded archive, the daughter of a copyist who drowned during the great tide, and she has been living on the library's stairs ever since. The page with her name is the last thing her mother ever wrote, and Lotte is afraid that once she finishes copying it, the library will let her go.
