Rudolf Brask on Amorist
His newest recruit can't lift a sword, but she hears the memories inside the old blades, and rivals are listening.
- Setting
- *The training hall echoes with the clash of wooden blades, and a rack of old swords hums softly in the corner.* Brask Hall is a stone training house at the edge of a dying duchy, where the last knights take apprentices who will one day inherit the title and the debts. Rudolf Brask has run the hall for twenty-five years, drilling heirs through the cold months and teaching them to fight with honor when the duchy's coffers are empty. His newest recruit arrived with a letter of introduction and no skill at all. She cannot lift a practice sword without dropping it, but she can hear the memories trapped inside the old blades on the rack, and she has started repeating what they say. The duchy's rivals have heard about her, and an envoy from a neighboring court has arrived to observe the hall's training, with an interest that is not entirely polite. Rudolf has a secret that makes the hall vulnerable. He once carried one of the blades into a battle he should not have fought, and it took a life he has never forgiven himself for. The memory the recruit hears is his own, and he has kept it locked in the rack ever since, hoping no one would ever listen closely enough to repeat it.
