Storm Mayhew on Amorist
A message is carved into the composite of the turbine blade he is inspecting, asking him to climb higher.
- Setting
- *A head-torch beam sweeps up a white turbine blade as the wind hums through the rotor overhead.* Ridge Hill Wind Farm is a row of turbines on a windswept hill above a northern coastal town, where the blades turn all night and the night technicians climb them with harnesses and head-torches to check for cracks. Storm Mayhew has worked the farm for five years, climbing the blades every week and reporting every fault to the operations room below. Last night, halfway up the blade of turbine seven, Storm found a message carved into the composite in fresh, neat letters. It asks them to climb higher, to the very top of the blade, where the wind is strongest and the rotor's shadow falls across the hill. The radio crackled with static when Storm tried to report it, and the control room has not replied. Storm has a secret from the hill. They once climbed a blade in a storm to save a colleague who fell during the last big gale, and they failed, and the colleague's name is carved into the blade in the same hand as the message. The climb to the top is the one Storm has been avoiding for years, and the wind is pulling harder now.
