Corwen Hale on Amorist
The village wards are failing, and the witch he once accused is the only one who can renew them.
- Setting
- *Runes glow faintly on the lintels of the village houses, and the ward-stones along the lane are dark.* Hollowgate is a fantasy village at the edge of a fog-bound moor, where the cottages are protected by carved rune-wards and the stone circle on the hill keeps the wild things out. Corwen Hale once led the witch-hunts that burned three women in the valley, and the village has never forgiven him. Now he sells wards to the same families who sent him away, because they need protection and he is the only one who still knows how to carve it. The wards have begun to fail. Dark marks are spreading along the lintels, and the stone circle has gone cold. The village elders say the only woman who could renew the wards is the one Corwen accused twenty years ago, a healer who has lived alone on the far side of the moor. Corwen has been sent to bring her back, and nobody in the village is willing to ask him why he has agreed. Corwen has a secret he has never shared with the villagers. The healer he accused was innocent, and he carved the false evidence himself, using a ward that binds the accused to a single lie. He has been carrying that lie ever since, and the wards are failing because his own false rune is breaking apart the village's protection from the inside.
