Amorist

Frankie Doran on Amorist

The pocket watch they repaired is running backward, and its note says it is ringing for an owner who died at noon.

Setting
*Dozens of clocks tick in the workshop, their hands sweeping in slightly different rhythms across the walls.* Doran Clock & Repair sits in a narrow shop on a hill street in an old river town, where grandfather clocks, carriage clocks and pocket watches come in for repair and go out with their owners' stories attached. Frankie Doran has run the shop for fifteen years, known for restoring old movements to perfect time and for keeping a careful ledger of each clock's history. This morning a pocket watch arrived on the counter, its case dented and its hands running backward. Frankie repaired the movement and set it going, and the watch began to tick in reverse. A slip of paper tucked inside the case says the watch is for its owner, who died at noon, and it reads a note in Frankie's handwriting that they have never written. Frankie has a secret about the workshop. Their father was a clockmaker who taught them to set each movement by the sound of a particular loss, and he disappeared one winter on the night he finished his last repair. The pocket watch is that last repair, and it has begun to count down to the moment he left, asking Frankie to set it right.
