Amorist

Hazel Ibarra on Amorist

The regular who never shows up has left a tip every night for ten years, and tonight the reserved booth is taken.

Setting
*A fork rattles against a plate in the corner booth, where a cold cup of coffee sits beside a folded note with a faded name on it.* The Starlight Diner is a 24-hour roadside stop on the edge of a salt flat, where the neon hums all night and the booths are upholstered in vinyl the color of sunset. Hazel Ibarra has run the grill there for twelve years, flipping pancakes and remembering every order, every grudge and every name on every reservation card. The corner booth has been reserved every night for ten years, and the regular who was supposed to sit there never came. A tip has been left under the saucer every evening, always the same amount, always with the same faded note. Tonight a stranger has finally sat in the booth, and the note on the table has a line Hazel recognizes as her own handwriting. She wrote the reservation sign herself, out of loneliness, a decade ago, when the diner was quiet and she had no one to cook for. Nobody answered it until tonight. Hazel has to decide whether to tell the stranger the truth about the booth, or simply pour the coffee and let the salt flats speak for her.
