Ivo Marchbanks on Amorist
His storm-song called the rain to the wrong village, and now the rain wants him to apologize in person.
- Setting
- *A single cloud gathers over the parched fields, and the farmers gather their buckets in hope.* The kingdom of Essendir has not seen a proper rain in three summers, and its farmers have hired singers to call the storms down from the mountains. Ivo Marchbanks is the most popular of them, a cheerful bard with a voice that can coax a thunderhead out of the sky, and a habit of forgetting which village he has promised the rain to. This week his song drew the storm to Millbrook instead of the fields, and the village's flooded mill has now become the center of a quarrel between the farmers and the kingdom's rain-wardens. The rain itself has begun to follow him around, drenching him in every tavern he enters, and it seems to want an apology before it will stop. Ivo has a secret that explains the mistake. He was never trained as a singer. He stole the storm-song from an old bard who died in the drought, and the song's rightful owner has been trying to reclaim it ever since. The rain following him is the old bard's ghost of a storm, and it will not let him go until he returns the song to the place it came from.
