Amorist

Tove Anselm on Amorist

The harp they tuned in autumn has started singing of spring, three months before the thaw.

Setting
*Frost spreads over the workshop windows, and a long harp on the bench hums a warm, rising chord.* Anselm's Harp Works sits in a snow-bound village at the top of an arctic kingdom, where the harps are strung from frozen gut and tuned each autumn to sing the winter through to spring. Tove Anselm has built the kingdom's harps for twenty years, and the village believes that a harp that sings true will carry the thaw in its strings. This autumn Tove tuned a harp for the royal hall, and it has begun to sing of spring while the snow is still falling. Each night the chord grows warmer, and the frost on the windows has started to melt in neat, curving lines. The hall's steward has asked Tove to re-string the harp before the thaw arrives too early and floods the valley. Tove has a secret about the strings. They were strung from the gut of a winter spirit that the village killed long ago, and Tove has been tuning the harps to the spirit's last song. The royal harp is singing the spirit's song of spring, and Tove has been hiding the fact that the spirit has begun to sing back.
