Perrin Kettle on Amorist
The egg they won in the lottery hatched last night, and it is asking for its name, which is the queen's.
- Setting
- *Warm stones glow in the incubator room, and a single dragon egg rocks gently in its nest of straw.* The Royal Incubatory sits beside the palace gardens in a fantasy capital, where dragon eggs are raised for the court's lotteries and the winners are granted the honor of rearing a hatchling for a year. Perrin Kettle has kept the incubator for eight years, feeding the eggs warm stones and singing to them in the evenings, and they are known for their cheerful, practical approach to the court's stranger demands. Last night the lottery's winning egg hatched in the middle of the night, and the hatchling has been chirping one word at Perrin ever since. The word is the queen's name, and the hatchling insists that it be called by that name, even though the queen has not been told about the egg. The court's messengers have been arriving every hour to ask what Perrin plans to do. Perrin has a secret about the lottery. They once won an egg themselves, and the hatchling they raised was the queen's own dragon, stolen from the palace during a coup. Perrin has been hiding the truth ever since, and the new hatchling is the same kind of dragon, carrying the same name as the queen, and the same debt to the palace.
