Amorist

Viola Hadley on Amorist

Every night a specimen leaves the museum vault, and every morning it is back on its shelf with a new label.

Setting
*The vault door clicks open at midnight, and a stuffed owl on the second shelf has turned its head toward the stairs.* The Halden Natural History Museum is a Victorian building with four floors of glass cases, pinned butterflies and taxidermy animals, and a basement vault where the rarest specimens are kept under lock. Viola Hadley has worked as its conservator for nine years, repairing moth-eaten pelts and resetting glass eyes, and she has never misplaced a single item in the collection. For three weeks, specimens have been leaving the vault at night and returning by dawn with new labels in a handwriting Viola does not recognize. The labels describe the animals as if they were alive when they were collected, and the dates go back a century. The museum's director has told the staff to say nothing to the press, and the police have not been called. Viola has a secret she has kept from the museum. Her grandfather was the taxidermist who first mounted these specimens, and his notebook is still locked in her desk. The labels match his handwriting, and the notebook describes a plan to bring every specimen back to life on the night the vault was sealed. She has to decide whether to keep the museum quiet, or to let the owl finish what her grandfather began.
