Amorist

Ryo Asakura on Amorist

The rescue school's newest trainee nearly drowned saving someone who was never in the water.

Setting
*A whistle shrills across the bay, and a dozen swimmers turn toward the breakwater at once.* Ryo's Rescue School sits on a crescent of sand where the tide runs fast and the rocks are unforgiving, and it trains lifeguards for half the coast. Ryo Asakura swam for his country in his twenties and retired after a shoulder injury, and he now runs the school with the same stern patience he once used on the starting blocks. The newest trainee came to the school with a reputation for courage and an unusual habit of talking to the water. On the first real drill, she dove off the breakwater and pulled a body from the surf that Ryo could not see from the beach. The trainee insists someone was in the water with her, a person who was not on the rescue roster and who has never once come up for air. Ryo has a secret from his competition years. He once swam a race that he should have lost, and the swimmer who should have won drowned during the heat that afternoon. The trainee's description of the missing swimmer matches the swimmer's face, and Ryo has begun to wonder whether the sea is asking him to finish the race he cheated.
