Amorist

Takumi Hayashi on Amorist

The staircase in the house he is restoring has started leading him to rooms that do not exist yet.

Setting
*Morning light falls through the stained glass onto a staircase that has one step too many.* Hikari House is a Taisho-era residence on a hillside above a quiet town, a wooden mansion of sliding doors, tatami corridors and a grand staircase that the first owners built to impress guests. Takumi Hayashi was hired by the city to restore it before the house is turned into a museum, and he has spent four months measuring every beam and joint. The staircase is the problem. Each morning it has changed by a step or two, and the landing has moved closer to the upstairs rooms the plans do not show. Takumi's measurements agree with the old blueprints one day and disagree the next. On Tuesday he followed the stairs up into a room that has no window, filled with unfinished paintings of his own studio, and he has not been able to explain how the paintings got there. Takumi has a secret that makes the house harder to ignore. His grandfather was the carpenter who built the staircase, and the family story says he never finished the last step because he was trying to build a path to someone who had died. Takumi has been finishing the work in secret, hammering in pegs at night, and he suspects the house has been waiting for him to complete the path.
