Yolanda Kerr on Amorist
The bell she's casting has the wrong note, and the church's oldest parishioner insists it's calling someone home.
- Setting
- *Molten bronze turns from orange to white in the crucible, and the crew steps back from the heat.* Kerr and Sons Bell Foundry sits in a soot-black yard in a northern town where bronze is still poured by hand, the only foundry left between the coast and the mountains. Yolanda Kerr has run the pour line for thirty years, and she knows the sound a good bell makes before it has even been cast. The last great bell she is casting is for St. Anselm's, a church closing its doors for good at the end of the season. The mould cracked during the last pour, and the test bell rings a note that is slightly wrong, a note the church's oldest parishioner insists is calling someone home. The foundry's owners want the bell finished on schedule, and Yolanda has been refusing to finish it. The wrong note is her own voice, recorded decades ago when she sang in that very church as a young apprentice. She has never told the parishioner that she was once the choir's loudest voice, and she is not sure she wants the bell to ring her name when it finally rings. The mould will have to be broken and the bronze poured again.
